What Does a Funeral Have to Do With Your Business?

Close your eyes. Imagine you’re in a room filled with people. You can see them, but they can’t see you. Some people "WHAT?" Key on Keyboard (questions explanation help support how)you recognize and some you don’t. Every one is quiet and looks very solemn. What is going on, you ask? What is everyone doing here? But, no one can hear you, remember?

Finally, someone gets up and goes to the front of the room and begins to speak. Wait a minute. It’s someone you know. Someone you know very well from your business. What is he/she doing here? You wonder, why does it sound like he’s/she’s giving a eulogy?  Because he/she is giving a eulogy! You’re at a funeral?!?! Wait. Who died?

Your business did. You are attending the funeral of your business, and the people in attendance are your partners, customers, vendors, and suppliers. What are they saying? Are they devastated because there’s never going to be another business like yours? Or are they toasting “good riddance” on your grave?

You can re-write the ending of this drama–before it’s too late. It’s a new year. Take some time to think about what people would say about your business if it were gone tomorrow, and if you don’t like it, take the steps to fix it now.

Here are some questions to get you started:

  • What worked in 2015?
  • What didn’t work in 2015?
  • What needs to change?
  • What are your priorities for 2016?
  • What are your personal/professional goals and do they align with your priorities?
  • What are the 3-5 key actions you can take to help you reach your goals?

What do you think? Please feel free to share your thoughts below.

If you know someone who needs to see this, please feel free to forward it to everyone in your network who will find it of value.
