How to know what to charge for a value-based business

If you’ve been in business for any length of time, you’ve had to struggle deal with that age-old question:
What to charge robin taney, the get real girlfor what you do. If you charge too much, your ideal client won’t find you and if you charge too little, your non-ideal one definitely will. When you have a product that clients can see, hear, touch, taste, or smell, the task is a little easier because the client is basing their expectations and impending results (satisfaction) on their senses. When you have a service, it’s more complicated because it’s based on that intangible thing called…value.

Kind of like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, attaching a price tag to the value you will create for them (note I said “will” as in it hasn’t happened yet) is, for some, just as impossible.

For you, value is based on three things:

  1. Quality
  2. Commitment
  3. Results

For your client, value is based only on results, and to some degree, time. Did you solve their pain in a reasonable amount of time?

Recently, my husband and I completely renovated a new house. The contractor agreed to work within our budget (which made my husband cry) and made the necessary changes in about two months. When I was getting ready to write the final check, I thought about asking for an itemized list of every nail, screw, and bucket of plaster to see if it had lined up with what I had paid. But, I realized that I had what I wanted. A beautiful house that was completed on time and close to the agreed budget. My point being that I got the results I wanted so it didn’t matter what I paid.

If you can deliver quality service and results to your client, you are providing value that is priceless to them.

So, make sure your pricing reflects that value. You (and they) are worth it.

Put on Your Thinking Hat: 6 Ways to Make Better Decisions

Making a decision is rarely a simple yes or no. Unless it involves chocolate and then, of course, it’s a YES. :-)Thinking Hats

Other decisions are more complicated. Perhaps they involve factors that are not within your control or are driven by time or budget issues. There may be people who are trying to help and instead are just confusing you. Sometimes you might be so overwhelmed by all the possible scenarios that you end up making no decision.

So, what do you do?

I’m going to share with you a process called Six Thinking Hats. What sounds like the title of a children’s story book is actually a thinking skills training course that was developed by Edward DeBono, a world renowned business consultant.

Six Thinking Hats teaches parallel thinking as an alternative to argument, so instead of attacking another’s thoughts or ideas, participants learn how to separate emotion from facts, the positive from the negative and critical thinking from creative thinking.

Here are the basics

  • There are six different imaginary hats that you can put on or take off.
  • Think of the “hats” as thinking icons.
  • Each hat is a different color and represents a different type or mode of thinking. (See photo)
  • In a group, everyone wears the same hat at the same time. (parallel thinking)
  • When we change hats – we change our thinking.

 

Remember, parallel thinking guides thought processes in one direction at a time so you can effectively analyze issues, generate new ideas, and make better decisions.

Thriving women are making great strides in every field, but I think the most exciting ones are in sports and politics.

When the Buffalo Bills announced it was hiring Kathryn Smith as quality control-special teams coach, she became the first woman to be named to a full time coaching position in NFL history.

The presidential campaign includes two women candidates, Carly Fiorina and Hillary Clinton. Regardless of your political affiliation, it’s exciting that two women are running for the highest elected office in the United States, and one might win.

Although women still have a ways to go in terms of income equality, we are the most powerful consumers in the world and our impact is growing every year.

That’s why it’s so important that we help eachother to be the best that we can be.

My PR business, Studio 4 PR, works with entrepreneurs and small business owners, but my passion is working with women. Why? Because I think we get what we give.

Here are 5 ways that we can (and should) do our part:

  1. Mentor other women – Whether it’s mentoring young women via an organization like Girls Rule Foundation or providing coaching services to women in business, your expertise in leadership, empowerment, or self esteem could be the catalyst that helps spark the next generation of leaders.
  2. Refer other women – Word of mouth is one of the most (if not the most) powerful forms of marketing, so when someone asks for a recommendation, always try and refer a women first.
  3. Buy from other women – When you are in the market for a product or service, think of a woman first. According to Forbes.com, women drive 70-80% of all consumer purchasing, through a combination of their buying power and influence. So, by helping other women, we are helping ourselves.
  4. Learn from other women – As women, we experience many of the same challenges, from fears that stand in our way to well meaning (or maybe not) people who stand in our way. Whether you take a workshop, hire a coach, or just find someone you admire and ask them to support you, don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn from someone who’s already been there.
  5. Inspire other women – We all have stories. Of defeat, of despair, of failure. We’ve all stood at the bottom of a giant mountain and thought there is just no way we’re going to make it to the top. Ever. But, those of us who have persevered, and not only made it to the top, but done it while pushing a giant boulder, have a responsibility, I believe, to share what we know with other women. We need to grab them by the hand and say “Yes, you can!” We need to make our mess our message. We need to be willing to stand in our vulnerability and use it to help someone else make the climb.
