Eight Ways to Cultivate Your Creativity According to Blythe Harris

There was a TEDx event in Sausalito, CA. I was thrilled to be invited to attend by Blythe Harris, the Chief Creative Officer of Stella and cofounder of Keep Collective. Her talk was inspiring, thought-provoking and outstanding. You can watch it for yourself here (her talk starts about 22:30 minutes into the video)
She covered eight steps to igniting your creativity in business. Here is a very brief recap:
  1. Develop Your Point of View. Take time preferably in the morning, to journal and write down your thoughts and opinions. Also, collect things over time that really speak to you, like photos, quotes, poems or magazine clippings. Place these around you where you work.
  2. Create a Safe Space. Curate a space where you can do your work, and where you can even fail. Having your own space is important for creativity. If you do not have an office a walk in your favorite nature place will do.
  3. Cultivate Mindfulness. Research has showed that getting in a more meditative space can be great for creativity.
  4. Seek New Experiences. “It is your job as a creative to put as many new things in front of you as possible.” Blythe says. Travel is the best way to do that.
  5. Learn the Language of Business. Know the vocabulary and be able to present your point of view in a passionate and calm way.
  6. Become A Curious Anthropologist. This is the ability to look at what you do through your customer’s eyes. The best way to do that is to talk to your customers.
  7. Set Boundaries. Cluster together your creative activities and then cluster together your executive activities. Embracing calendaring helps with this.
  8. Be Resilient. Bounce back and stay creative.
