I love this journey of being an entrepreneur. I learn more and more about myself as I’m writing. Just the other day, I was writing about how it was so unfamiliar for me to make an investment in myself.
What I realized was that I was taught to invest in a job.
I worked hard at each of my jobs for five to ten years.
But being taught to invest in a job means I was taught to invest in someone else’s dream or goal.
I’ve done that very well for over 20 years.
I have no doubt that it was the subtle programming of my childhood.
I wasn’t taught that I had value, and several abusive experiences in childhood seemed to reinforce it.
Being sent away from my parents to live with a brother I didn’t know certainly solidified my thinking that I had no value, as far as that 13-year-old girl was concerned.
So working hard seems to be normal. And it was what I was rewarded for.
So when I started my business, I of course started… working hard.
I can’t tell you how burnt out I had gotten working hard even for my business.
I thought working hard would bring me more money. If something wasn’t working, then I just worked harder.
What about you? Are you on your grind, putting your energy into making it happen?
What if our focus is in the wrong direction.
What stopped me from working hard?
I experienced my value.
I experience the value that “I”—in and of myself—bring to the table.
I know now that my value is not based on what I do or how hard I work…it’s based on who I am.
It’s been a journey but the same is true for you.
How often do you struggle with your value in setting the price for your products, asking for your speaker’s fee, or paying for your next coaching, training, or mentoring experience?
When we become entrepreneurs, so often our intention is to focus on others, our clients. Do you find yourself bumping up against an invisible wall as it relates to money? But what no one told us was that this journey is about each of us finding our sacred value. It’s about each of us understanding the connection between our value and what we do.
I learned this rule from my coach, International Speaker, Author Multi-million business owner Lisa Nichols: 80% is who you are and 20% is what you do. I trust this will help you move into alignment with your value and your worth.
