Homemade Dulce de Leche

Holiday GiftsThe hostess gift that I am bringing to parties this year is homemade Dulce de Leche. It’s perfect over ice cream, as a filling for sandwich cookies or just enjoyed by the spoonful. With three (little!) kids, it can be really tough to get anything done but I still want to make an effort and gift my friends with something tasty and homemade. And so, I settled upon this one ingredient Dulce de Leche. It’s awesome. Bon Appetit!

Homemade Dulce de Leche

The easiest way to make Fabulous homemade Dulce de Leche!

Ingredients: Can of sweetened condensed milk (make sure it is not evaporated milk!)

Oven

  • Empty the contents of a can into an oven-proof dish; and cover it with foil.
  • Place the covered dish in a larger roasting or casserole pan and fill it up with water until reaches three quarters of the up the covered dish to create a water bath. Bake at 425 degrees F for 60-90 minutes checking every 30 minutes on the water level and add more as needed. Stir the dulce de leche every time you check on it so that it browns evenly.
  • Dule de leche is ready when it takes on a brown and caramel-like appearance. Remove from the oven and whisk to smoothness. Let cool before storing.

Guest Writer – Phoebe Schilla

Phoebe dreamed of going to cooking school as a young child, and when she was 19, she was given the opportunity to study at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. Needless to say she jumped at the chance and hasn’t looked back since. After her return from France she continued her education working in restaurants, and eventually found herself back in Culinary School, this time at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York. She spent two years there, and graduated with an AOS degree in the culinary arts.

The Cordon Bleu and the CIA couldn’t be more different. The two educational styles complemented each other and gave her a well rounded education. As a result, she knows a lot of minutiae about the culinary arts and feels comfortable cooking just about anything. There is nothing that pleases her more than to make something beautiful and fragrant to eat. This is what she was meant to do, and she loves sharing her cooking skills and knowledge with others.
