Hello again. Last week we talked about how to wake up in the flow. Today let’s see how you can keep that flow going.
What are your first thoughts of the morning?
In just the same way as what we wake up to can greatly influence the tone of our day, so too can the first thoughts that we have in the morning. When we fall asleep at night we push a sort of reset button. Sleep interrupts the thoughts and patterns of our day and we have a choice each morning to continue what was happening the day before, or change what we are experiencing. This begins by what thoughts we choose to have first thing in the morning.
For the longest time my first thought in the morning was something like “is it already morning? I’m so tired!” A few internal groans accompanied those thoughts. Are your thoughts anything like that? Are these thoughts serving you? I know they weren’t serving me.
Be aware of what your first thoughts are. Begin to train yourself to have thoughts that serve you better. Nowadays, as soon as I wake, I immediately start to say a few gratitudes while I’m lying there in bed. My first one is always something like “mmmm….I LOVE my soft bed.” Then I say a few more. Try that for yourself. If you get stuck, use this format:
Say a gratitude about your life
Say a gratitude about your family or loved ones
Say a gratitude about work.
Life, family, work.
If you feel up to it, say a gratitude about yourself. This one can be hard in the beginning, but it’s worth the effort. Feeling gratitude for the things that you like about yourself has the double effect of making you feel grateful and of feeling good about yourself.
Next week we are going to talk about some very simple things you can do to energize yourself in the morning. Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you then.
